Workshop: Relational Sounds

organized by WET film cooperative

12-14 November 2021

A workshop on relational sound recording, inspired by Steven Feld and Hildegard Westerkamp. We will listen together, learn basic microphone techniques and produce our own compositions; the recording and editing will be approached as collaborative processes, enacted through conversation and attention to place. The final pieces will be played in a public mixing session at WORM. We welcome participants of all experience levels. The workshop will take place over three days (see schedule for details).

In the 1970s, Feld and Westerkamp initiated recording practices in two distinct locations. For Feld, it was the beginning of decades of work in the Bosavi region of Papua New Guinea where he developed a practice of ‘dialogic editing’ alongside Bosavi collaborators. Meanwhile in Canada, Westerkamp began her ‘Sound Walks’ feature on Vancouver Co-operative Radio, where she would live-narrate a walk in the city.

We will draw on Feld and Westerkamp’s methodologies to turn our attention to each other and to the environment of Rotterdam, asking what field recording can offer as a social and ecological practice.
