Ben Russell
Russell is a filmmaker and multimedia artist whose work takes audiences on transformative, nonnarrative journeys that meld the immersive charge of psychedelia with ethnographic visualization and objectification. His films probe the cinematic apparatus—its capacity for immersion and mimetic identification—while exploring altered states of consciousness and secular rituals of trance.
Based in Los Angeles, Russell’s practice spans diverse influences—from the visceral noise of his series Trypps (2005–10) to action painting, avant-garde cinema, portraiture, stand-up comedy, and global capitalism. His body of work includes feature-length films, installations, live performances, and short films that examine the interplay between immersive experience and cinematic form, complemented by his curatorial work with the Magic Lantern screening series.
