Commissions

Since 2022, for each edition of Field Recordings, we have commissioned a new work by an artist, which is then presented at the festival. These commissioned pieces may be completed works or works in progress, allowing for their premiere and continued development to be presented.

As Field Recordings is organised by filmmakers themselves (Hryniuk & Leyendekker), one of our goals is to support creative practices in manifold ways. For every edition, we commission a new work by an artist, which then premieres at the event. In the past we commissioned a short film Repetitions by Morgan Quaintance (2023, selected for Tiger Shorts Competition IFFR), and for the 2024 edition
of “Field Recordings,” we will commission a sound piece
by Anna Khvyl, a Ukrainian composer and artist based in Den Haag. The commission will be a site specific audio walk, incorporating field recordings, musical compositions, and listening exercises.

Still Present as you notice its absence  - Audiowalk
In  Collaboration with  Katía Truijen  and Piotr  Armianovski

             9 November 2024 at Coolsingel 120
This audiowalk reflects on Rotterdam’s identity through the personal experiences of being a tourist, a migrant, and a local. Traversing the border between the parts of the city which were rebuilt after World War Two and those which were left intact, Kyiv-born artist Anna Khvyl and Rotterdam-based Katía Truijen engage in a dialogue about the urban landscape. As we move alongside them, we listen to musical compositions made from field recordings of Rotterdam's sounds—those initially inaudible to the human ear—mixed with fragments of personal conversations and audio diaries.

We closely explore one of the world’s largest ports, connected by water to distant places and lives thousands of kilometres away. By examining the similarities and differences between the wartime experiences of Rotterdam and Kyiv, the artist poses questions about each city’s conception of self. The walk invites us to join Khvyl on a very personal journey, listening closely to the city, observing its ongoing negotiation with water, and exploring its suppressed memories.

We will walk together on Saturday 9th November, 11am-1pm. Please bring a pair of headphones and a smartphone. We will use the TRACKS app, which is available to download for free here

The audio piece will be available from the beginning of Field Recordings on the TRACKS app, and you are welcome to do the walk at any time.

Starting point: Coolsingel 120 (next to the exit from metro Beurs)
End point: Leuvehaven water taxi stop
Tickets include a water taxi ride.

Morgan Quaintance:

I Shoved and I Dug and I Hacked Away

11 November – 13 November 2022 at WORM Rotterdam
In this edition of Field Recordings, we will premiere the short film Repetitions, commissioned and supported by Field Recordings, Documenting Complexity, and WORM.

It’s an audiovisual exploration of recursive patterns, a series of repeated sequences, flickering images, and looping sounds. On the surface, repetitions concentrate on inducing retinal excitement and states of anticipation, but telephone messages and speech provide a through line that speaks to physical labour, industrial work, and fragile bodies.
