If I Had A Dollar

David Wojnarowicz (camera by Marion Scemama)
1989, usa, beta transferred to digital video, 3 min, english with English sdh

The video records Wojnarowicz’s prose poetry performance If I Had A Dollar, a piece confronting the American healthcare system and its hypocrisy during the 1980s AIDS pandemic. The text is also known as Untitled (Hujar Dead), directly referencing Peter Hujar, photographer and Wojnarowicz’s ex partner, who had passed away from AIDS-related complications shortly before Wojnarowicz was diagnosed with the virus himself. In an homage to his lover and mentor, juxtaposing the private with the public, the work poses a stark critique of the state’s inaction in the face of the pandemic.
