With films by Karla Crnčević, Oleksiy Radynski, Arwa Aburawa & Turab Shah, and Priyageetha Dia. A connecting thread for the works gathered in this program is a reflection on toxic landscapes, transformed by the forces of war, colonialism, and ecological disasters. Employing diverse approaches and tools, such as archival footage, 3D animation, and various documentary techniques, the films resist dominant narratives and reclaim places with which the filmmakers hold strong and personal ties.
With film and sound works by Hildegard Westerkamp, Kamal Aljafari, Deborah Stratman, and Rehab Nazzal. From the aeroplane traffic affecting a suburban community of Richmond, Vancouver, to the constant presence of drones experienced by deaf children of Gaza, to a requiem for the spirits of'space dogs’, this program prompts us to look up and consider the sky as a place of oppression and political contestation. On the other hand, looking down from above, aerial footage offers a new and fraught perspective on the landscape, revealing processes of appropriation and demolition.
With short films by Ewelina Rosińska, Vasyl Lyakh, Daniel Jacoby, and Sara Rajaei. With extensive use of pre-digital techniques and archival materials, the filmmakers gathered in this program turn their gaze inwards, towards their youth, kin, or homes, often meditating on something to which a return is impossible, whether due to forces of occupation, authoritarianism, or the passage of time. The films unveil hidden or silenced histories that shape generations, with the filmmakers describing their own biographies against the backdrop of larger socio-political processes and sometimes daring to imagine utopian futures.
